Adoption Process

Paws and Purrs is committed to finding permanent, loving forever homes for our cats and kittens. We do our utmost to match adopters with the cat(s)/kitten(s) that will be purrfect new members of their family. All of our adoptees live in foster care, we know their personalities and the home environment in which they are most likely to thrive.

Paws and Purrs prefers to adopt kittens under six months of age in pairs. This greatly reduces the kittens' separation anxiety, provides them with playmates to keep them out of mischief, and relieves their forever family of the responsibility of providing the endless entertainment kittens often require. If single kittens are available for adoption, we try to place them in homes that already have cat(s) five yrs old or younger. (We've learned that kittens with boundless energy upset older cats.)

We have many wonderful adult or special needs cats. These cats may be the perfect fit for your family. The family not prepared to deal with the rambunctious nature of kittens - may find an adult cat to be ideal for them. Paws and Purrs does not sanction the declawing of cats, but we do have cats that have been declawed by previous owners.

Paws and Purrs' adoption process includes:

  1. A preliminary phone interview to discuss what the adopter is looking for in a cat/kitten.
  2. The adopter's completing an application.
  3. Having the adopter and the cat(s)/kitten(s) get to know each other a bit.
  4. An interview with all family members present and possibly a pre-adoption home visit
  5. If everyone feels the adoption will be a good one, the adopter is asked to sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. The adoption fee covers the costs associated with spay/neuter, age appropriate inoculations, a FIV/FeLV test, any other vet care the cat/kitten may need while it is in foster care.

Post-adoption, Paws and Purrs makes after care calls roughly two days, two weeks, and two months after the animal(s) go to their forever home. That provides the adopter the opportunity to discuss any questions they may have about the cat/kitten and its care. Adopters are encouraged to stay in touch with Paws and Purrs to share wonderful stories and pictures of their new family member.
